• Bad weather coming to N.C

From morningstarr@VERT/DIGDIST to All on Thursday, January 22, 2026 12:40:46
I hope the storm that is coming this weekend, isn't bad. Last time we got a storm like this, we were without power for a month...
How bad do you guys think it will be? I'm debating on renting a generator or getting a hotel. I am not happy!!! :(

Last time we had an extended power outage, my BBS was running bare-metal
on a laptop. I was able to take it to Starbucks and transfer mail - I'd download everything then crash my downlinks.

All our lines are above ground. I don't know if i would call that 3rd world country, though.

I lived in an area where electric was underground. Even so, you can just
about bet that the lines eventually run above ground somewhere and, if they
get bad ice, your power is still going out.

No, we have an adequate infrastructure which is funded by out taxes. as should you. you should contact your congressman and local govt.
you shouldn't live like you are in a 3rd world country.

All our lines are above ground. I don't know if i would call that 3rd world country, though. My syster has stage four cancer and needs oxygen (she is only 40) and if our power goes out, we will have issues.

And you've made no preparations for that? No generator, or oxygen tanks
    put away in reserve?

I wish we had underground power. I'm in the hills along the California
coast, and on my little cul-de-sac street, half of the street is fed
power from the cross-streets. My half, nearer the cul-de-sac has power
running over a ravine behind our block and into the rest of the street.
That line is notorious for having trees fall on it.

Internet has its own issue. It runs along the length of the street, but
the utility pole is across the street. AT&T is the low wire on the pole,
and moving trucks are notorious for taking down the low-hanging feeder
lines to the house next door (which has AT&T).

They've "solved" the problem by looping the fiber up and over the
Comcast line, which is about a foot and a half higher up on the pole. It
gives the line just enough lift that the truck clears.

I wonder how earthquakes would affect underground powerlines though. Since parts of the west coast US are prone to earthquakes, I imagine that could be a problem. Aove-ground power lines would be affected by earthquakes too, but I wonder if issues would be worse if they were underground..

Areas from New Mexico and Colorado, east into the Arklatex, Arklamiss, Midsouth, Southeast, MidAlantic, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys, DelMarva,
and New England, all felt the wrath of Fern.

I had heavy sleet in southwest Little Rock, with some snow and some
freezing rain, but I never lost power. I was doing winter weather traffic
with the ham radio operators for 16 hours during the storm.
