I used to play Wing Commander: Privateer a lot after it came out in 1993. I never did finish the game though. Recently I bought the game on GOG (it's $2.99 there currently, and it's the original DOS version - it comes with DOSBox to play it):

I started a new game, but since I played it a lot in the past, I wondered if I could give myself more money without using the game's built-in money cheat (which would void missions, etc).. I opened my save game in a hex editor and searched for my money value, and found it and was able to edit my save game with the hex editor to give myself a lot of money. My saved game loaded successfully, and I think I was a couple bytes off with my edit, because I ended up with an order of magnitude more money than I planned on. I bought the fastest ship and all the max upgrades for it and started the missions again that lead you on the mystery of the alien artifact. I'll see if I actually finish the game this time..

Is it that part of WC that tried to emulate Elite/Frontier type of gameplay, rather than X-Wing/Tie-Fighter type of game as primary idea?

I probably can't answer, as Privateer is the only Wing Commander game I ever played, and I haven't really played X-Wing or Tie Fighter much.
