Pre-Halloween Targets (evening)
It's time to seek out some spooky targets in honour of Halloween. The Skull Nebula (NGC246) in Cetus is located in the southeastern sky in mid-evening. This planetary nebula's oval shape and dark voids resemble a skull. For a challenge, try to spot Mirach's Ghost (NGC 404), a magnitude 11.7 galaxy
tucked just 7 arc-minutes to the northwest of the bright star Mirach in Andromeda. Night owls can try for the Witch Head Nebula (IC 2118). This large (3 x 1 degrees), bluish reflection nebula is centred 2.5 degrees to the west
of Rigel in Orion.
