• I just finished watching Highlander: The Series! (For some definitions of "finished")

I've slowly been going through the show since October of 2021. It was quite a ride--though I didn't watch every episode, it was interesting to see how it gradually improved through the early seasons, and then all kind of fell apart in the last couple. I definitely think the Kalas arc in season 3 was the high point of the show--it was the most complex story they ever did, with a villain who survived for more than two episodes, the introduction of Methos, solidifying Duncan and Amanda's relationship, etc. I was disappointed that season 5 didn't, in my estimation, live up to seasons 3 and 4--even the Four Horsemen episodes felt underwhelming to me. I couldn't buy that four guys who rode around terrorizing some desert encampments were the ancient equivalent of biological and/or nuclear warfare! And of course Richie's death was an atrocious writing choice--but what's funny to me is that if you skip the whole Ahriman arc*, his death is never actually mentioned, making it easy to pretend he's still out there somewhere, adventuring on his own as he often did over the course of the series. All in all, I'm glad I watched the series, but if I rewatch it, I will mostly stick to the episodes that feature Amanda and/or Methos--the core group of Immortals (and Joe) was by far the most interesting aspect of the show.

Now I'm going to go be sad that we never got a Methos & Joe spinoff.

*And maybe a couple of other episodes from season 6--I skipped all of that season except for the Ahriman stuff, Unusual Suspects, Indiscretions, and the finale.

I have watched through the series 3 times and agree completely that seasons 3 and 4 are the peak. (3, 4, 5, 2, 1, 6 for me). I love Joe, but perversely hate the watchers and think the Horton storyline just dragged on too long and was revisited too many times.

Also agree that the Four Horseman were underwhelming. Loved them when the episodes aired, but they have not held up to a rewatching.

And agree re Ahriman. Next time I rewatch I will just skip those episodes. That plot was not well done.

Yeah, Horton died three times, and then came back in Ahriman form. He was ok in his first couple of appearances, but he wasn't compelling enough to be a good long-term antagonist. Speaking of skipping things, I think I'll skip the season 2 finale in future rewatches--that's another story that I think will be pretty easy to pretend didn't happen.

Completely agree on season 3 Kalas. I know The Four Horsemen Arc is really popular, but it would have had to be a bit longer to be comparable for me. I do, however, really like the first season. It just feels like it's own different show all together. Season 6 and 2 are my least liked.

By now you probably know, but Richie's death was because they expected that to be the final episode. They wanted something really dramatic to go out on a bang. The semi-plan was effectively The Source. Years in the future, Joe and Methos find Duncan where he's been hiding out, to bring him his katana so he will finally go out and put paid to Ahriman.

I hated when they killed Richie. Loved joe ,Amanda,Methos. Would have like to have seen a different ending for the show. The 4 horsemen story was cool for its time. Needed more backstory .they should have ended the series with that
