• Dial Up Gateway

From Netsurge@TIME/DIGDIST/DISKSHOP to All on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 00:57:00
I have been working on a dial-up -> telnet gateway for bbs-scene.org over the past few weeks. This dial-up gateway will offer dial-up access to all of the bbs systems listed in the bbs-scene.org bbs list.

Essentailly a user will call a number and be presented with a menu of bbs systems, the server will then create a telnet connection to the bbs the user chooses. This will give all the sysops who have their systems listed in the bbs list the ability to offer dial-up access.

What I need, before I roll this out is a few testers. If you have a modem handy (if you don't know what a modem is this your way too young for this) then fire up SyncTERM, set it to modem and dial 416-623-2970.

Please let me know how you make out here. This is currently setup on a voip line which usually causes connection issues at speeds faster than 28800. I'm toying with the idea of adding an acutal POTS like to ensure stability based on the feedback I get from people testing it.

    Thanks.

I've only got VOIP here as well, and it seems VOIP>VOIP doesn't work
at all with modems. :) I have a POTS line being installed at the new
office, but that won't kick in for about a month.

I'll try and visit a friend in Toronto this week and use his phoneline
    for testing. :)

yeah i was always confused when the 56k first ame out how all of the bb's i would call with the exception of 1 would be 28,800, but if i dialed an isp
for internet i'd get maybe 32,000, never usually got above that on 56k connections..

I was speaking about this with another guy which told me these features work
if you get the fax line package. I'm assuming if this is true, it would be
some form of codec? Maybe this is how you properly get dial up working over voip to voip?

Anyone who offers a premium for a so called "fax package" is doing nothing but ripping you off.

Faxing does work over voip, as long as you turn off echo cancellation and allow NSE to pass through but it only works at 9600 (fax either works at 14.4k or 9600). I can connect to my modem via voip at 9600 without a problem, it's just painful to do so.

Yeah the X2 was crap. i had an old USR 16,800 modem that i got through the
USR sysop program back in the day, i then upgraded it with a new
daughterboard to 28.8k, then flashed it for the X2, but it never connected above 28,800, it also got pretty flaky.. i ended up just tossing it and
baught a Zoom External K56 Flex, best dam modem i ever had, but that is
where most other systems i conencted too were still 28,800, but i could
connect to my isp for ineernet at 32,000 to 34,000 was suually the most
stable due to line noise... was just unsure why other bbses with 56k flex

There are configurations & codecs that are well suited to fax use, but whether or not a provider charges extra for their use would vary from one to the other. Mine doesn't charge any extra; in fact their fax packge is a fax to email service, quite far from what I'd want for this.

VoIP to VoIP modem calls are especially sketchy (although I have had some success with them) just because both ends are lagging and the audio is to some extent mangled. At least with VoIP to POTS calls one end of the "conversation" is on a stable line. In time I'm sure that VoIP quality will improve enough to make this a non issue; some of the blame may also be on lag induced by slow broadband connections (I know my DSL could be better.)

Actually this makes me think that at present, something half-duplex akin to packet radio might be better suited to VoIP. I'm (slowly) working on a packet radio interface to my BBS; maybe I'll see about making that work for dialup as well.

When I lived in Corpus Christi for a few months, they had a local BBS that
was a freenet and offered free Internet services (no idea how long THAT lasted). Guess they had really good phone lines down there, because I
almost consistently managed 48k or better. I remember logging on to watch
a few shuttle launches, and I would redial a few times to catch better lines
if I didn't get the 48k to ensure good video... :)

I have been working on a dial-up -> telnet gateway for bbs-scene.org over t past few weeks. This dial-up gateway will offer dial-up access to all of t bbs systems listed in the bbs-scene.org bbs list.

Essentailly a user will call a number and be presented with a menu of bbs systems, the server will then create a telnet connection to the bbs the use chooses. This will give all the sysops who have their systems listed in th bbs list the ability to offer dial-up access.

What I need, before I roll this out is a few testers. If you have a modem handy (if you don't know what a modem is this your way too young for this) fire up SyncTERM, set it to modem and dial 416-623-2970.

Please let me know how you make out here. This is currently setup on a voi line which usually causes connection issues at speeds faster than 28800. I toying with the idea of adding an acutal POTS like to ensure stability base the feedback I get from people testing it.

The only problem I run into is that 416- is Canada and I have calls outside the US blocked. Is there still those 10-10-1234 numbers you can call for long distance? anyone know a way around the block?

Once thats setup if you need I have a real working lanline and a kickass modem. if you want to have a # inside the US setup.

When I lived in Corpus Christi for a few months, they had a local BBS that was a freenet and offered free Internet services (no idea how long THAT lasted). Guess they had really good phone lines down there, because I
almost consistently managed 48k or better. I remember logging on to watch
a few shuttle launches, and I would redial a few times to catch better line if I didn't get the 48k to ensure good video... :)

yeah i remember one bbs in my area got conencts like that as well, but no others would.. i can't remember if it was a dedicated loop or something special.. but most other bbses i could never get above 28,8/336..

The only problem I run into is that 416- is Canada and I have calls outside the US blocked. Is there still those 10-10-1234 numbers you can call for lo distance? anyone know a way around the block?

Once thats setup if you need I have a real working lanline and a kickass modem. if you want to have a # inside the US setup.

yeah i have my LD blocked too.. 10 10 987 has always worked for me.. might
want to check i think it's still 10 cents a minute or something.. maybe 3 cents.. i forget.

Yep same here... In a weird way I miss those days. :)

Just in the middle of a ftp grab and you remember that you didn't turn call waiting off and then, like Murphy's Law, the other line went off and killed your connection. :(

I still remember my call to the phone company to figure out why my BBS line all the sudden had call waiting on it.
Seems the phone company had took it upon themselfs to offer it at a free rate. Then I got to explain what the line was used for and how stupid it was to just do somthing like that without first asking me about it. Thats when they came up with LineLock(tm) I may have invented the idea ;)

It was awesome when you connected to someone else who had an ISDN line. You got rock solid 64k connections. I had two of them, one with internet services for ftp and shit and the other for people to connect to. I think the demarc units are still in the basement of my mom's house.

The wind chill isn't that bad here as it is further north in Ontario like Sudbury. The real problem we have here is the insane humidity in the summer. It's far from a dry heat.

I believe with the 56k technology, you needed a special connection from the
ISP to the phone company. This is one reason why you could never get as good
a connection from a regular modem to regular modem.

As for sucky connections, it depended on line conditions. For years I
couldn't get decent connections due to a fault somewhere in my block...like others, we put out countless calls. At some point something finally got
fixed, and I could get those stellar 45-48k connections.

I remember 130 baud, but then again i'm old.

Yeah i'm sad to say i didn't get my first computer till 91 when i got my first 2400 modem, i think maybe 9600 was out there too, it was a cheap compudyne modem from comp usa that i threw into my 286 , i really wanted the 386 but my mom baught the wrong one on home shopping club.. haha :)

Some friends of mine had earlier systems and modems.. but i didn't get
to play with their stuff much other then playing games.. :(

wish there was cool stuff like that in my area back then.. :) of course
i was out partying too much and probably never noticed.. hehe

The PC users in my area gathered once a month to talk about the latest trends in viruses, new software, have lessons on various things. It's become a nonprofit, I think, and still meets as far as I know. The underground boards had a few users that would meet at a local coffee shop -- teens, of course.
I met up with them several times, turned out I knew a few of them. We were close friends for a number of years.

The best fun was with the Amiga users, though. I went out several times with them; it was my first experience at miniature golf, and we did some other fun outings. My Amiga 500 was pretty much stock with just a floppy drive, and a couple of the sysops let me come over and check out their systems. At the time, those were really cool experiences.

    those cold temps

The wind chill isn't that bad here as it is further north in Ontario like Sudbury. The real problem we have here is the insane humidity in the summe It's far from a dry heat.

Yeah Im glad we have none on a 115+ degree day. I would die if there was no escape from that heat. As long as you find shade its manageable.

I believe with the 56k technology, you needed a special connection from the ISP to the phone company. This is one reason why you could never get as go
a connection from a regular modem to regular modem.

As for sucky connections, it depended on line conditions. For years I couldn't get decent connections due to a fault somewhere in my block...like others, we put out countless calls. At some point something finally got fixed, and I could get those stellar 45-48k connections.

Yeah i loved my Zoom 65k Flex, i had a USR 28.8, but it never worked above
28.8 even after i flashed it for X2.. i ended up throwing that thing out, it was so iffy at times if it was going to drop calls.. When i comes to line quality though i know your pain. My house wiring back then was pretty old, ie 70's.. and when it would rain, there would be constant buzzin during the
sumemr time,, i had to get my person line ran seperate from the house and run through the storm window in the basement.. :) The good ol day, if soemthign wasn't working right,, then you wern't doing anything at all.. hehe

I'm sure you'll get more telnet callers then voice line. The last time i even had a modem hooked up was about 2000,, since i got highspeed there really hasn't been a need for it..

That and no one wants to pay for phone calls at $10 a minute or so anymore.. hehe

True I get unlimited longdistance in the USA and its only 5 bucks more for all of canada. MaBell killed dialup. :(
But while I have the landline and free distinctive ring I figure why not.
