    I'm not into "pro" audio, but I'm interested enough to notice the
    announcement of "Wired", a GPL'd software system for music creation and production. It's version 0.1 code :-) so I doubt it's very functional at present, but here's what it says about itself:

    Wired aims to be a professional music production and creation software
    running on the Linux operating system.

    It brings musicians a complete studio environment to compose and record
    music without requiring expensive hardware.

    Wired supports unlimited Audio/Midi tracks playback and recording, and
    introduces a Plugin system for instruments and effects. It can also read
    AKAI CDs and import 18 different Wave formats.

    The following instruments and effects are planned to be released in
    Wired:

    * Loop sampler, with time-stretching
    * Beatbox with a new editing concept, to create reallistic and complex
    drum sequences
    * MIDI controlled sampler, which can read AKAI program and sample files.
    * High-pass, Low-pass and Notch filters
    * Compressor/Limiter
    * Delay

    and it's got some purtee screenshots!

    Would one of the more qualified please take a brief look at their website at

    http://bloodshed.net/wired/?sid=1

    and see if you think it might amount to anything?

    Sounds pretty nifty. OTOH, there are (and have been for years) plenty of software packages like that for Macintosh and Windows platforms. So this is nothing particularly new, other than running under Linux. Of course, if it turns out to be good, that would make one less excuse to keep running Windows :)

    I was more concerned with the thought that it was GPL'd so you could
    enhance the thing yourself. They got GPL'd apps like this for Mac/Win?

    Ahhhh - so you're looking to get under the hood. Not likely to find that in similar Mac/Win apps. It's all expensive commercial software and they're not letting anybody near the code.

    No, I'm not personally an active "pro-audio" person. I just thought that someone actively using software of that type might be keen to help develop
    the code. I assume that if you have an idea for an effect you want to
    apply and nobody has thought of or implemented it yet, it would be nice to
    be able to do so yourself.

    Maybe I am assuming too much about users of that type of application.

    the code. I assume that if you have an idea for an effect you want to apply and nobody has thought of or implemented it yet, it would be nice to be able to do so yourself.

    Actually, "plug-in" effects are readily available from third parties (and that leads me to believe the specification is readily available). With this type of software, that's usually how it's done. The core program performs your basic functions (recording, playing back, and various editing functions) - pretty much the function of a tape deck in the analog world. Effects are applied via plug-ins (reverb, eq, you-name-it), the analog equivalent of various pieces of external processing gear.

    That's pretty much how it works for the audio recording software. Now if you get into the complete "music production" stuff, that includes virtual instruments, loop and sample players, etc. Still... the "devices" are all modular, made to virtually emulate their real-world counterparts. And again, third-party "devices" are out there, so apparently the specification must be available.

    Some time if you have a chance take a look at Propellerhead's "Reason" - they take the emulation of traditional gear to the point of being able to turn the "rack" around and view (or even rearrange) the "patch cords" that connect the various virtual devices. Way cool program.

    Maybe I am assuming too much about users of that type of application.

    The majority of users are likely to be musicians or audio engineers. While I'm sure there are some who'd like to program too (like the creators of the software), the majority are probably content to just work with it. FWIW, with all the various plug-ins out there, I've yet to want an effect and not be able to find one somewhere. Sometimes at a price that I can't justify, but I've always been able to *find* one, if not afford it :)

    Probably so... Left-brain types...

    Although, I often wish I had a little more left-brainedness (did I just make
    up a word?)

    Funny -- I just selected the URL above (top one) and dropped it into

    I hope this pans out. I am downloading it now.
