From Radagast@TIME/VERT/EELF to All on Wednesday, November 01, 2006 11:33:00
I recently purchased a copy of Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio 4 for use in my little home studio thingy... After going through the tutorials, I'm
beginning to realize just how powerful this type of software can be.

So, last night, I decided to try my hand at recording a song. I chose an
old Pink Floyd song (Free Four) from Obscured by Clouds, as it's a fairly simple song. Having never played it, I needed to learn it first.

I found myself without the use of an _electric_ guitar as my Les Paul is sitting in the band's trailer, and my Strat is in the shop being repaired.
So the only six string guitar I had available to me was a Goya acoustic
with a clamp on sound hole pickup... oh well, it'd have to do. I did, however, have a cheap electric bass to use.

There were no external effects used, all effects were provided by the
    Sonar software.

Anyhow, after about three hours, I had this...

    http://www.richardw.net:8081/usbdisk_1/FreeFour.mp3

Not great, but fun, as it's all me baby... ;-)

Not bad at all for just throwing it together! If I had to be critical it would mostly be the bass, but the quality came out pretty good.

When are we going to make a Synch CD? Seems like alot of us have bands or are musicians?

*shrug* All that's really needed is a "master list" sort of thing that
points to raw tracks in the works for listening and collaboration, something
to make it possible to point to for conversation reference.

I've got a small sampling of stuff at www.geocities.com/tulljunkie if anyone's interested in seeing if they can come up with harmonized parts, etc.

Hey, that'd be great. Don't expect too much there right now, though. I
only threw that site together to make a handful of people stop bugging me
about it, orginally, and not with a whole lot of forethought about content.

I suppose I should go back and at least mention what key each is played in, but I play solo so often I'm not even sure the tuning's perfectly on ordinary pitch. Most are simply in E or e.

Could work in reverse, you know, too... Post a link for a bassline and
let's see what can be constructed on TOP of it. No pressure or anything... Doesn't have to be polished or perfect (my stuff sure isn't lol), just something to get creativity intermixin', you know?

It would be neat to collaborate, but would probably be easier just to do separate songs. May be a themed CD about Synchro.

*scratches head* As good a drummer as DM might be? A song that's just
drums? Maybe Roalt is an excellent bass player, but just a bass? Even guitar, same thing.

*shrug* I mean, okay, if what's intended is the easiest possible path, but personally I don't balk at a bit of complexity and rather find the idea of collaborating worth the time to do it.

I know you could lay a nice lead guitar down!

To get an idea, check out my myspace. http://www.myspace.com/chcomputer

What sucks about those pictures are, none of those are my guitars...
Just bought a new Les Paul Studio II black with gold equipment, has
EMG's in the front and rear with the old '60's neck... Got a '78 LP
Classic Sunburst with Dimarzio Super Distortions in it. Got an old 81
Charvel made by Jackson, a one piece body and neck, its purple. :)
Then there's the old standby 72 Fender Strat, its white... not one I
play very often. I've got some other old jukers, a Sekova LP Copy with
a Gold metal flake finish, and an old Cortez Fender Strat copy, and
then there's the old no-name acoustic... and the last in my collection
is a 1941 Gibson ES150 acoustic/electric that was handed down to me
from my father. Got a couple of amps, from a Peavey 5150, Marshall
JCM900, Sun 212r, and an old Fender Deluxe II. Couple of pedals, from Digitech RP200a and a Line 6 POD XT which I got a couple of months ago,
and I'm not to sure about yet. Not quite like the previous model...
    but it seems to work.

Anyway, these are my toys... :)

I recently purchased a copy of Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio 4 for use in my little home studio thingy... After going through the tutorials, I'm beginning to realize just how powerful this type of software can be.

I used to use cakewalk but I've moved up I guess you could say. Now I use Steinberg Cubase SX3. I've also used Cool Edit Pro and Pro Tools. After using many different pieces of software I've become more at ease with the stability of cubase SX3. Although I think some of the filters in Cool edit are very good. Adobe ended up buying the software from syntrillium a couple of years ago. It's called Adobe Audition now. Nice piece of software.

*shrug* All that's really needed is a "master list" sort of thing that points to raw tracks in the works for listening and collaboration, something to make it possible to point to for conversation reference.

I've got a small sampling of stuff at www.geocities.com/tulljunkie if anyone's interested in seeing if they can come up with harmonized parts, etc

Click tracks are very important. If you get some tracks going on whoever starts out with this. Have the first track start with a click track and then take it from there. I can sing very well and I'm very good at song writing. I've been writing my own songs now for 18 years now. I've been a musician for over 30 years now. I can come up with some really cool melodies as well.
