I like listening to music, but often I find music distracting while I try to work or study. Sometimes I listen to music when doing physical work though.
It depends on my mood - Classic rock, 80s music, jazz/new age (such as Jean-Luc Ponty or Enya, etc.).. It really depends.

While I'm primarily a rock/metal fan, if I'm working it has to be something fast paced and usually without words. Otherwise I start focusing on the music rather than work. So that means I'll usually listen to various types of EDM, psy trance, etc., while working. It usually helps pretty well in keeping me focused.

Back in 2001, I ripped a collection of ambient, IDM and electronic tracks from an online game called Majestic, and that's been my go-to work music since
then. No lyrics, and a mixture of spooky, etheric, upbeat and ambient beats that's been great for blocking out open offic noise.

    They're playing on http://radio.realitycheck.org - check'm out.

In the mid-90s, I used to play Mechwarrior 2 a bit (I was never that great at it). The game CD had some audio tracks after the data track, and one of the songs that always stuck with me was Pyre Light:

Side comment: I think it's interesting that the "go to site" for finding
"free" songs/music is YouTube. When my kids starting doing this a couple of years ago instead of using sites like Pandora, SoundCloud, iTunes, etc., I was appauled at the waste of bandwidth: sending the video (often just a still photo or lyric slides) over the Internet/4G network to their phone and they're not even watching it (just listening)! But they don't know/care about wasted bits, just convenience. Now I do it too on occasion! :-)

try it here, this was suggested to me when the browser couldn't find the above url:

ambient chill stuff. I'm a few songs in.. still trying to decide, I guess.
Nil had pangs of a church organ, and Overand was a bit hang drum-ish. I think these tunes just creeped me out. lol.

I used to run icecast on a server when I had all the kids at home and in school. Let them put whatever music on they wanted, saved our Internet bandwidth for other things.

In the mid-90s, I used to play Mechwarrior 2 a bit (I was never that great at it). The game CD had some audio tracks after the data track, and one of the songs that always stuck with me was Pyre Light: https://youtu.be/gX4G1RJYTi8

nice one there, that brought back memories. I recall when Descent came out, the music sounded awesome on my PAS16, so much better than on the SB2 at the time. This tube has the music done on a Roland SC-55, and it sounds close to
what I recall on the PAS16 with the samples I had loaded to memory -
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBVe_LX4gEk

I still listen to The Gone Jackals ever since I played Full Throttle back in the 90's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6znirm1oyO0, Legacy is still a favorite thrash.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=6znirm1oyO0#t=462

Other than browsing and searching tube, I stream from DI Radio or Pandora on a chill or ambient station when I am working, switch to trance or 80's rock when gaming.

    good stuff, Maynard.

:) Yeah, I am still surprised at the amount of music you can find on YouTube. But it seems like whenever you want to find a song for someone to hear, chances are it can be found on YouTube. What surprises me more is the amount of stuff on YouTube that I'd think is copyrighted and probably would not be allowed on YouTube, but it's still there anyway. I've seen YouTube take down videos or limit their acccess by region due to copyright issues, but there are a lot that are still there.

That's cool. I liked the Descent music as well. A few years ago, I found that the Descent & Descent 2 source code had been released, and someone ported it to Win32 so that it can be played on modern versions of Windows (the project is called DXX Rebirth):
    http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/
It actually works fairly well. You can take the game data from the original Descent and Descent 2 games and use them with the DXX Rebirth binaries.

Yeah, you'd think there'd be an even better audio-only source for these treasures, but alas, nope. Sometimes the best "tool for a task" is not the most popular one.
